The Board of Directors of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods supports the enactment of a United States national gun policy to establish a nationwide, seven-day cooling-off period for handgun purchases from dealers, so as (l) to afford local police officials the opportunity to run a criminal records background check of the purchaser and (2) to deny the angry or suicidal persons immediate access to handgun purchase from a dealer.

We therefore:

1. Endorse the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act;
2. Commend members of the House of Representatives of the United States Congress whose affirmative votes enabled passage of this bill;
3. Urge that the Senate, at a minimum, pass this act as written, or that it further strengthen this legislation by mandating a criminal background check of prospective purchasers without requirement of a national computerized register;
4. Urge the enactment into law of this bill, as now written or as strengthened, by signature of the President; and
5. Request that our United States affiliates communicate to their senators and representatives their endorsement of this legislation.
