Exploring Membership in WRJ
Sisterhood is a way to bring the women of your congregation together, connecting them to the congregational family through social, educational, and spiritual gatherings. Membership in sisterhood allows your women to be a part of a communal power of 65,000 like-minded women who are able to advocate with one voice.
Sisterhood is a great place to encourage:
- Networking and socializing with other Jewish women
- Advocacy for humanitarian and women’s rights
- Educational activities
- Worship and spirituality
- Leadership opportunities
- Support for Israel
Who can join WRJ?
Membership is open to any sisterhood/women’s group operating within a Union for Reform Judaism affiliated congregation.
No two sisterhoods are the same
Each sisterhood plays a unique role within its congregation; sometimes sisterhood serves as the social action committee, sometimes sisterhood runs the Judaica shop, sometimes sisterhood organizes education and programming opportunities, and sometimes sisterhood meets just for social activities. While sisterhoods fulfill different roles in our congregations, we all share the same values and connection to Reform Judaism.
Who can start a sisterhood?
It only takes a few committed women to begin a women's group in your congregation. WRJ, along with your local district, is here to guide and support your efforts.
What's the difference between a sisterhood and a women's group?
Historically, all women's groups were called sisterhoods and represented a religious society of women. Today, some of our women’s groups still identify themselves as sisterhoods while others choose to be called a women’s group or a women's club. What matters is not the name of the group, but the intent to be part of a larger organization with common goals.
